There are so many areas that need to be considered in the care of those with special needs. Self-advocacy is so important with “normal” or ordinary people, and to have a discussion on how to prepare the special needs population to know how to speak for themselves is fantastic!
I have worked with many populations (mentally ill adults, mentally retarded children and adults, autistic children and teens, and currently with teens on the
spectrum of autism along with students who are severe behavior handicap or SBH). Training these populations to have independent living skills is a must, and to have a discussion on how to go about setting goals and making it happen for them is very necessary. I applaud everyone who has the interest.
