language or lack of

by bsamares
I have just started this page.  I am a mother of two children one of which is autistic.  He is 4 years old and a very beautiful child, but does not communicate.  I am not sure how to get him to start speaking and afraid that he never will.  He is able to get his needs across without ever saying a word, but beyond needs, there is no other communication.  I have been warned not to do sign language or pictures with him because this will slow down language acquisition.  I was wondering if there is anyone else that has had similar experiences and if you had any suggestions for me.

Be patient his words will come our caleb also could not speak go to your search box and look for sites that have the alphabet and says each letter, we let caleb spend hours online with sites that do the alphabet and read books, it helped him a great deal, they tried to get us to do sign language and the pictures but didnt agree with them and wouldnt do it at home. Dont know about your son but we had to take milk away from caleb there is a chemical that for some reason delayed his learning, and no, no dr. told us had to figure out that by ourselves. Within a few week caleb began making the sounds of the letters and he now says sentences. I will try to find the ones that caleb used and let you know, but just type preschool alphabet sounds in and see what you come up with. good luck

I have an idea. I used it with my son when he was young. He also was able to get his wants across but not much more. Try to imitate back to him what it is he is doing (whether it's a noise or pointing) when he wants something quickly before you give what he wants. It's gives him more attachment to what he's telling you. It also shows him that you are trying to get on his level of communication. Imitation has helped greatly in the beginning. Use his "signs" at first and you might be able to transend those signs into a form of communication that you can use to build on.
